See UEFA Europa & Champions League Semi-Final African Stars

European football biggest stages the UEFA Champions League and the Europa League are now in the final knockout rounds with four teams left in both competitions. The Semi-final draw completed earlier today set up mouth-watering pairs that include:

Arsenal vs Atletico Madrid
Marseille vs Red Bull Salzburg
Bayern Munich vs Real Madrid
Liverpool vs AS Roma

A significant thing of note is the number of players in both competitions that of African descent. We’ve gone through the eight competing football clubs, to compile the list of African players in all the squads.

UEFA Europa League

Arsenal vs Atletico Madrid

English Premier League side Arsenal will face Spanish capital side Atletico with the Gunners boasting three African stars in their squad. Nigeria’s Alex Iwobi, 25-year-old Mohamed Elneny from Egypt as well as Gabonese striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang who is cup-tied. The duo of Elneny and Iwobi will be hoping to appear in their first European final when they face Atleti’s 24-year-old Ghanian midfielder Thomas Partey who has made 15 appearances for the Black Stars contributing four goals.

Marseille vs Red Bull Salzburg

Lique One club Olympique Marseille will make an European semi-final appearance for the first time since 2004 with a host of African stars in their ranks. Tunisian veteran defender Aymen Abdennour, Guinean forward Bouna Sarr, and the trio of André Zambo, Brice Nlaté, and Clinton N’Jie from Cameroon.

Patson Daka

The French club will face Austrian Bundesliga league leaders Salzburg who have five African stars in their squad. Midfielder Enock Mwepu and striker Patson Daka with 15 caps both from Zambia, and midfield pair of Diadie Samassekou and Amadou Haïdara from Mali.

 

UEFA Champions League

Bayern Munich vs Real Madrid


19-year-old Moroccan Achraf Hakimi is the only African in both squad of the two Champions League heavyweights. The right back who has made seven appearances each for both Morocco and Real Madrid scoring once. The youngster is however yet to feature in the Champions League for the ‎Los Blancos.

Liverpool vs AS Roma

English Premier League side Liverpool would be making their first European semi-final appearance since 2010 where they were defeated by eventual Europa League winners Atletico Madrid. The Merseysiders have three African players in their squad, Cameroonian defender Joel Matip and the attacking pair of Sadio Mane from Senegal and for AS Roma Egyptian star Mohammed Salah.

The semi-final opponents who shocked the world by defeating Spanish behemoth Barcelona via away goal earlier this week have no African star in their ranks.

The Liverpool trio will be hoping to join the 19 African stars that have won the Champions League.
