Southampton, Lukaku Compounds Mourinho Woes

Manchester United striker, Romelu Lukaku was taken off on a stretcher inside the first 20 minutes of Manchester United’s game against Southampton, following a clash of heads with Wesley Hoedt.

The striker, who has played every minute of United’s Premier League season so far this season, received treatment on the Old Trafford pitch with play suspended for over five minutes.

The entire crowd, home and away fans, gave the striker an ovation and England striker Marcus Rashford was sent on as his replacement.

Lukaku is understood to have been treated inside the stadium by club doctors, and is not expected to be taken to hospital at this stage, but Jose Mourinho has confirmed that the striker will miss at least two games.

Mourinho told reporters after the match that, “When you see a player leave the pitch like he did, it is usually two games at least.”

Lukaku is Manchester United’s top scorer in the league this season with ten goals and four assists so far.

However, his injury is another setback for Mourinho after he confirmed that Zlatan Ibrahimovic will be sidelined for a month with a knee injury.

The Swede went off at half-time in United’s Boxing Day clash with Burnley but Mourinho did not divulge the nature of his injury.

“Zlatan one month out,” Mourinho told BT Sport when asked about United’s striking options in light of the head injury sustained by Romelu Lukaku during Saturday’s Old Trafford game against Southampton. The game against the struggling Southampton ended without a goal from each side. Chelsea have now leapfrogged Manchester United to the second position.
