In what appears to be shocking and an apparent display of lack of touch with the reality of the plight of Nigerians, the Nigerian Police high command, has accused those it termed “mischievous” politicians of behind the #EndSARS campaign.
This came, even as the Senate yesterday mandated its Ad- Hoc Committee on the review of the current Security infrastructure of the country headed by Senate Leader, Ahmad Lawan, to immediately investigate all issues of alleged human rights abuses leveled against the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), and make relevant recommendations.
It would be recalled that many Nigerians over the weekend, took to the social media to protest the alleged “careless” disregard for human lives by the operatives of SARS, thereby calling for an end to the existence of the outfit.
However, speaking on a Channels Television programme, Jimoh Moshood, Force Public Relations Officer, said one Jega Awosanya Segun, the alleged originator of the hashtag, was under investigation.
He alleged that Segun had links to some unnamed politicians, saying, “Somebody who had an ulterior motive put up #EndSARS, Nigerians should be mindful because the social media is very porous.”
“We traced the hashtag and traced it to mischievous politicians that are trying to create problem in the system that SARS is a stumbling block for them to achieve objective in the election and we are investigating this.”
“SARS is not a killing machine as it was created to deal with cases of robbery and any other case the offender carries firearm. SARS is been doing very very well.’’
Meanwhile, the resolution of the Senate to probe SARS, yesterday was sequel to a point of Order by Senator Isa Misau, APC, Bauchi Central which was later allowed to be a motion where he noted that according to the Police Act and regulation, the Force Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, (Force CID) is the highest investigative arm of the Nigerian police.
He said, “We are not saying that there is no infraction, if there is an infracation, not only on SARS personnel but conventional policemen, people should report to us.”
The Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris has ordered an immediate restructuring of SARS.
“We want to disabuse their minds that SARS should be ended. But when you have complains, complain to us. For a lot of people pushing their remarks on social media, most of them are not correct.”
