The Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance and other Financial Institutions have commenced the screening of Godwin Emefiele’s retention as Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
This is coming days after President Muhammadu Buhari recommended the retention of Emefiele as Governor of the Apex Bank.
The Senate had also on Tuesday mandated the committee to carry out the screening and report back within one week.
However, the committee, chaired by Sen. Rafiu Ibrahim (PDP, Kwara), commenced the screening at noon on Wednesday.
Recall that Emefiele was first appointed in 2014 by former president Goodluck Jonathan and was retained when Buhari came to office in 2015.
If the Senate approves Emefiene, he will then be the first since 1999, when Nigeria returned to democracy, to be nominated to serve two terms as CBN governor.
