Captain Vincent Kompany headed past David De Gea before Ilkay Gundogan neatly added a second for the home side. English winger Raheem Sterling had chances seal the game but was wasteful.
United would however punish the Blues after the break as Paul Pogba scored twice in 97 seconds.
