Jack Wilshere was forced off 10 minutes into the second half of Arsenal’s EFL Cup semi-final first lef with Chelsea after suffering an injury to his left ankle last night.
The 25-year-old, whose career has been pockmarked with a string of injuries, blocked a fiery cross from Chelsea midfielder Danny Drinkwater, after which he was forced off for treatment.
Though Wilshere tried to continue, he was unable to run and headed down the Stamford Bridge tunnel a minute after being allowed back on to be replaced by Mohamed Elneny, to the evident concern of Arsene Wenger.
The Arsenal manager, sat in the Stamford Bridge press box as he serves a three-game touchline ban, was notably frustrated at Chelsea’s refusal to put the ball out of play while Wilshere was sat on the turf.
Wilshere later returned to the Arsenal bench with ice on his injured ankle.
Wilshere has enjoyed his best run of form in several years and, with Aaron Ramsey still sidelined through a hamstring injury, his absence will be keenly felt by Wenger.
