India has become the third country to record over one million cases of coronavirus, Reuters reports.
The United States and Brazil hit the figure earlier.
Currently, cases in America are close to 3.6 million and a little over 2 million in Brazil.
India witnessed a surged in recent weeks, pushing the country past Russia.
Authorities have the struggled to enforce the lockdowns and keep people indoors.
The Ministry of Health announced India recorded 34,956 new infections on Friday.
This took the toll to 1,003,832, with 25,602 deaths.
Giridhar Babu, epidemiologist at Public Health Foundation of India, explained that more cases were the natural progression of any pandemic.
“As we move forward, the goal has to be lower mortality, a critical challenge states will face is how to rationally allocate hospital beds,” Babu noted.
