Editorial: The Paedophile Edo Corper And Government’s Deafening Silence

Paedophiles are adults who are sexually attracted to children and mostly end up sexually abusing underaged children. This ill culture has remained as an unspoken epidemic in Nigerian society silently worming its way into the lives of a huge number of Nigerian children, thereby endangering the future of our nation. In the wake of this increased epidemic the Federal government seems to have turned deaf ears, feigning ignorance. The case of a serving NYSC member in Edo State, Mayowa Gbadamosi is a sad example.

UNICEF reported in 2015 that one in every four girls and one in ten boys in Nigeria had experienced sexual violence before the age of 18. According to a survey by Positive Action for Treatment Access, over 31.4 percent of girls said that their first sexual encounter had been rape or forced sex of some kind. These alarming figures reveal the growing trend which government and agencies have shut their eyes to.

This increased child sexual abuse recently took a surprising dimension when a serving National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member in Edo State, Mayowa Gbadamosi posted pictures of his female student on social media bragging of his sexual exploit with her. His disturbing post which he captured alongside a picture of himself and one of his female students reads: ”When ur student wants the *ick and u contemplating. At the end, she gon go down and s*ck the fuck outta you. I learnt to stop living for the ones that don’t care and make myself happy #BbayfaceBoy #EdoCorper #BadGang”

It is extremely disappointing for a teacher who assumes the position of a role model to post a comment as this. Bragging on social media that you are proud of your sexual escapade with your student is a shameful act which the National Youth Service Crops (NYSC) should wade into to curtail further occurrences from NYSC members. Mayowa did not stop his unbelievable action there. He also posted a video of himself and his male students on social media jesting of how they will celebrate Valentine with drinking ‘pammy’ palm wine. Obviously, this NYSC member has no idea about the responsibilities of a teacher. Teachers literally mould lives and invest their personality in their students because an average student spend more time with their teachers than even their parents. The psychological and physical damage of this NYSC’s member’s shameful act is unthinkable.

It is more disappointing that several weeks after this sad incident, the Edo State NYSC is yet to speak on their position concerning Mayowa’s action. The Ministry of women affairs in the state was even quicker to act by promising the general public that the case will not be treated with kids’ glove. We await more agencies and the NYSC to speak up and condemn this shameful action meeting it with stern punishment. Children remains future leaders and their future should not be jeopardised and toyed with by a careless youth corper.

It is imperative that paedophiles should be eliminated in our society, and this must start with punishing the perpetrators appropriately. Unfortunately, many of these perpetrators go scot-free. Mayowa’s case might end up to be one of those engaging news which everyone talked about and later forgot it happened with the culprit walk freely on the streets looking for their next prey.
