The speculated plan of Senator Godswill Akpabio to leave the Peoples Democratic Party for the All Progressives Congress has raised the polity.
Chief Sylvester Akaiso, a chieftain of People’s Democratic Party, PDP, in Akwa Ibom State, described the news of Akpabio’s defection as a relieve of burden in the state’s PDP, adding that the rumoured defection was received with joy, and jubilation everywhere in Oron.
He said, “APC members in Oro ethnic nationality had declared their intentions to leave the party if Akpabio had actually been admitted into APC, those who are PDP members have said they would not follow him to APC”.
However, yesterday, Akpabio stormed the state to firm up his defection to All Progressives Congress causing serious vehicular constrain due to the crowd that thronged his convoy, chanting his name.
It was gathered that the former Senate Minority Leader is billed to make official declaration today during a special reception rally at Ikot Ekpene Township Stadium.
Similarly, the immediate past spokesman of APC in the state, Mr Edet Bassey, expressed optimism that Akpabio’s defection was a good omen for the party, given his political antecedent.
“The party is like a church and the church cannot throw out sinners. You welcome him or her and change him or her. We welcome him into the party because he has great political value.
“He has gone to see the President and other leaders of the party. So, it will be suicidal for him to do anything that will jeopardize the interest of the party in the state,’’ he said.
