In less than ten days, the All Progressives Congress, APC national convention which promises to field candidates to fill the party’s vacant positions will hold, however the curvy twist is how former governor of Edo state, Adams Oshiomhole appears to be the only blessed aspiring party chairman.
Recall that the 2018 National Convention Planning Committee had earlier announced the zoning arrangement for positions available, stressing that the convention date remains June 23.
“The NWC positions include the National Chairman, Deputy National Chairman North, Deputy National Chairman South, National Secretary, National Organizing Secretary, National Women Leader, Six Vice National Chairmen one from each geo-political zone (to be known as Zonal Chairmen), National Youth Leader, National Legal Adviser, National Treasurer, National Financial Secretary, National Publicity Secretary, National Auditor, Deputy National Secretary, National Welfare Secretary, Special Leader (Person with disabilities).”
However, shortly after the NCPC had announced date and zone, and the attendant show of interest for the office of chairmanship by Adams, president Buhari swiftly began campaigning for him urging APC governors to support the former South-south governor.
As if the presidential endorsement had ripple effect, party leaders, chieftains as well as governors actually started mouthing their support for Adams. Eventually, the outgoing chairman of the party, Chief John Oyegun who was alleged to be vyingfor tenure elongation, suddenly backed out saying that he (Oyegun) would not contest again for APC chairmanship when his tenure elapses in June.
Before President Buhari chose to publicly support Oshiomhole, it was speculated that Ken Nnamani, a former Senate President who served at the National Assembly between 2005 and 2007, Ogbonnaya Onu, aformer Governor of old Abia State (current Science and Technology minister) were possible replacement for Oyegun but at the moment, Buhari’s endorsement of Oshiomhole seems to make every other possibility irrelevant.
Also the national leader of APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and ex-interim National Chairman of the APC, Chief Bisi Akande alongside governors on the party’s platform, have joined the league of those supporting Oshiomhole’s chairmanship move.
Tinubu, speaking to reporters shortly after he and Akande met with Oshiomhole behind closed doors, said his visit shows solidarity to the chairmanship aspirant as well as to further strengthen the party to work for national progress.
“My visit symbolises solidarity and unity of purpose to continue to bring a progressive party that will carry Nigeria in a progressive manner, (to bring about) good governance with courage and commitment.
“There is no doubt. I have worked with him, why should I have any doubt? The stuff of this game (politics) is that you win. Have you seen a democrat who is ready to lose? Just accept it, it is about choice.””, Tinubu stated.
Kebbi State Governor, Atiku Bagudu, had earlier told newsmen that every APC governor looks forward toward emerge of Oshiomhole as party chairman.
“All of us. Our party is looking forward to the chairmanship of Adams Oshiomhole. I can tell you that Adams Oshiomhole is my candidate as a governor and all the governors I know. He is the candidate for the chairmanship”, Bagudu said.
