The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Idris Wase has directed the Chief Whip of the House, Muhammed Monguno to sanction members disregarding social distancing rules during plenary.
The Deputy Speaker who presided over the plenary on Tuesday made the announcement before the house adjourned to mourn the late Sen Adebayo Oshinowo.
It would be recalled that the National Assembly sequel to its resumption of plenary in April adopted guidelines put forth by the Nigeria Centre For Disease Control (NCDC) which include special sitting arrangements and compulsory use of face masks.
Wase in his remarks slammed lawmakers who do not adhere to the sitting arrangement. He noted that members who are not maintaining NCDC protocols are putting their families in danger.
“Chief Whip, you will have to enforce the rules. When someone’s name is announced, just follow the rules, there are consequences for it, Just follow the rules. You (lawmakers) should not allow your name to be mentioned. We are supposed to be honourable members.
“I want us to sit in accordance with the rules and conduct ourselves in accordance with the protocol, otherwise we will be putting our families in danger, putting our country in danger. For now, Chief Whip, you have to enforce the rules, and we are going to hold you responsible,”
He added that members using the face shields without the facemask will be prevented from entering the green chamber.
